Edward Elgar(1857 - 1934)

Sir Edward Elgar, one of the major composers of England, along with Henry Purcell, Frank Bridge, Benjamin Britten, and Handel, was born in Worcester, England, in 1857. At his father's recommendation, he once dreamt of becoming a jurist, but instead self-taught music instruments and composition. From 1880, during his early 20s, he performed as a pianist and conductor of the 'Worcesster Glee Club' for a while. In 1885, he succeeded his father as an organist at his church.
Elgar's serious composition activities began in 1889, when his wife strongly encouraged him to do so. He was 32 years old and was rather too old to become a composer. His wife, Caroline Alice Roberts, actively supported her husband's composition activities. Elgar dedicated the work "Salut d'Amour" to her.
In 1898, he composed an orchestral piece "The Enigma Variations". The title 'Enigma' was derived from the fact that the themes for the variations are vague. The premiere took place in 1899 and was highly praised by conductor Hans Richter. It also brought him a reputation. In the following year, he presented the oratorio "The Dream of Gerontius", which was acclaimed by one of the best composers of the era. Richard Strauss, and this helped him rise to international fame.
With his "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", he had now become a true nationalist composer of Great Britain. The "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", which have 5 pieces, were composed for the coronation of King Edward VII. They are solemn orchestral marches. King Edward VII was very impressed by these works and ordered Elgar to insert lyrics for the first march. To do this, Elgar used a poem by A. C. Benson, 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This independently presented song is considered as Britain's national song by many and is still widely sung to date. The music showed its true value again during the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the accssion of Queen Elizabeth II to the thrones of seven countries.
Following World War I, Elgar quietly resided in his home and Sussex and continued to compose late works, such as chamber piecees and his masterpiece "The Cello Concerto". This concerto reflects the romanticism of Schumann and Brahms and the chromaticism of Wagner. The premiere was a failure, but Pablo Casals and Jacqueline Du Pre recorded it later and became one of the most beloved pieces (and remains to date). Five months after the premiere, however, he was extremely shaken by his wife's death. This resulted in the end of Elgar's creative activites, and spent the remaining 15 years until his death without any significant work.
With his cello concerto, two symphonies, violin sonata, piano quintet, symphonic study "Falstaff", "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", opera, songs, and orchestral pieces, Elgar employed rich harmonies of romanticism and never broke away from classical styles. By encouraging young British composers, he established a foothold for 'The English Musical Renaissance'
