지적이고 독창적인 해석과 연주로 세계 주요 언론과 청중들로부터 찬사를 받고 있는 첼리스트 양성원은 오스트리아의 뮤직 베라인, 파리의 샹젤리제 극장, 살 플레옐, 살 가보우, 뉴욕의 링컨 센터, 카네기 홀, 워싱턴DC의 테라스 극장, 동경의 오페라 시티홀, 중국 북경의 NCPA등 세계 굴지의 유명 연주장의 공연에서 호평을 받았으며, 전 세계에서 초청이 끊이지 않는 아티스트이다.

EMI classics의 아티스트 (2000~2008년)로서 코다이 작품집, 라흐마니노프와 쇼팽의 낭만적 작품집, 바흐 무반주 첼로 모음곡 전집, 피아니스트 파스칼 드봐이용과의 베토벤 첼로 소나타와 바리에이션 전곡을 발매하였다. 그의 코다이 데뷔앨범은 영국 그라모폰지의 '에디터스 초이스'와 '크리틱스 초이스'로 선정되었고 네덜란드의 '에디슨어워드'에 노미네이트 되었다. 이후 데카/유니버설 아티스트로서 슈베르트 작품집(2009), 체코 필하모닉 오케스트라와 드보르작 협주곡과 둠키 트리오(2010),앙상블 레봉벡과의 ‘Musical Getaway’(2012), 트리오 오원의 베토벤 피아노 트리오 대공과 E flat, Op.70 No.2 (2013), 피아니스트 엔리코 파체와의 브람스 첼로 소나타와 슈만 작품 모음집(2014), 베토벤 피아노 트리오 전곡(2015), 메시앙의 시간의 종말 사중주(2016), 바흐 무반주 첼로모음곡 전곡 (2017 두번째 녹음), 리스트와 쇼팽의 작품집' Cantique d'Amour'(2018), 차이콥스키, 쇼스타코비치 와인베르그의 러시안 트리오 작품집(2019)의 총 22장의 음반을 끊임없이 발표해오고 있다.

비엔나 뮤직 베라인에 초대되어 오스트리아 방송교향악단과 협연한 양성원은 크리스토프 에센바흐 정명훈, 로랑 프티지라르, 즈네덱 마칼, 피터 외트보쉬를 비롯한 세계적인 아티스트와 함께 연주해왔다. 파리 살 플레이옐에서 드보르작 협주곡을 Orchestre de Colonne와 연주하였고, 피터 위트보쉬의 첼로 협주곡을 서울 시향과 함께 아시아 초연하였으며, 2017년에는 바흐 무반주 모음곡 전곡 독주회 10회를 프랑스, 일본 ,한국에서 가져 언론과 평단의 찬사를 받았다. 2018년 뉴욕 카네기홀에서의 엔리코파체와의 성공적인 독주회 이후 프랑스 Radio Classique과 북미전역 NPR라디오 방송과 여러매체 에서의 인터뷰및 그의 바흐와 쇼팽&리스트 음반이 널리 소개되었고 큰 인기를 끌고 있다.

또한 후학양성에도 열정을 쏟고 있는 그는 캐나다 밴프 국제 실내악 국제 콩쿠르, 앙드레, 카사도, 통영 국제 콩쿠르의 심사위원으로 위촉되었으며 매해에 영국, 프랑스, 이태리, 스페인 등에서 연주와 마스터클래스를 갖고있다.

2006년 올해의 예술상, 제4회 대원음악연주상, 제1회 객석예술인상 수상 및 프랑스 문화훈장 슈발리에를 서훈받은 양성원은 서울 태생으로 파리 음악원과 인디애나 대학을 졸업하였다. 

현재 연세대 음대 교수이자 영국 런던의 로얄 아카데미 오브 뮤직(RAM)의 초빙교수로 재직 중이다. 또한 프랑스의 'Festival Beethoven de Beaune' 와 한국 문화 예술의 가치를 세계에 알리는 가교 '페스티발 오원'(2011년~현재)의 예술감독으로서  전 세계에서 존경과 사랑을 받는 아티스트로서 대한민국의 위상을 드높이고 있다.

Cellist Sung-Won Yang has performed throughout the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He has given solo and chamber music concerts in such prestigious venues as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York, the Salle Pleyel and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Musikverein in Vienna, the Opera City Hall in Tokyo, Symphony Hall in Osaka and the National Center for the Per -forming Arts in Beijing. His recitals have also taken him to other leading cities, such as London, Rome, Frankfurt, Madrid, Prague, Helsinki, Boston, Seattle, Tel Aviv, Shanghai, Sydney and many others.

 

While an exclusive artist for EMI-Korea, his first album, entirely devoted to Kodály, was picked as both an “Editor’s Choice of the Month” and a “Critic’s Choice of the Year” in Gramophonemagazine(February and December 2003). He was also nominated for Best Solo Album in the Edison Awards in the Netherlands (2003). His other recordings for EMI include works by Rachmaninov and Chopin with the pianist Ick-Choo Moon (2002), Bach’s complete suites for solo cello (2005) and Beethoven’s complete sonatas and variations for piano and cello with pianist Pascal Devoyon (2007). These recordings were all received with great acclaim from music-lovers and critics alike. Since his Schubert album with violinist Olivier Charlier and pianist Emmanuel Strosser appeared on the Decca label in 2009, his recent recordings have included Dvorˇák’s “Dumky” Trio and Cello Concerto with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Zdeneˇk Mácal (2010); Musical Getaway, an album combining jazz, Latin music and la variété française with the ensemble Les Bons Becs (2011); and the complete works for cello and piano by Brahms and Schumann with Enrico Pace (2014).

 

Sung-Won Yang has collaborated with such great musicians as Christoph Eschenbach, Myung-Whun Chung, Peter Eötvös, Johannes Kalitzke, Laurent Petitgirard, Dong-Suk Kang and Pascal Devoyon. His interpretations of Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto, Brahms’s Double Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with the Orchestre symphonique français were broadcast by French TV in France and by Eurovision throughout Europe, and are available on DVD (Goldline Classics). In addition, many of his live concerts have been broadcast by France Musique, NHK (Japan), KBS (Korea) and other radio networks.

 

A regular performer of contemporary music, Sung-Won Yang gave the Asian premiere of Peter

Eötvös’s Cello Concerto Grosso, with the composer conducting the Seoul Philharmonic, and also its Austrian premiere in Vienna with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien. He also regularly

commissions new works by young composers, including two piano trios by Korean composer Min-Jae Jeon (2014 and 2016), a piano trio by French composer Pierre Charvet (2006) and a trio featuring the daegeum (a traditional Korean wooden flute) by the Korean-American composer Jeeyoung Kim (2006). These works were premiered by Sung-Won Yang in Paris, Saint-Nazaire and Seoul.

 

Born in Korea, Sung-Won Yang graduated from the Paris Conservatoire and was assistant to János Starker at Indiana University in the USA. He has been invited to join the juries for the Banff International String Quartet Competition in Canada, the André Navarra International Cello

Competition in France, the Gaspar Cassado International Violoncello Competition in Japan and the

Tongyeong International Competition in Korea. Recipient of numerous awards, he is currently a

professor of cello at Yonsei University in Seoul, visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Artistic Director of the Festival Owon at Château de la Bourdaisière in France.
