Beethoven, Ludwig van

Beethoven, who incorporated humanism and spiritual elements to the formalistic works of art, was born in a musical family. His grandfather and father were both musicians. His father educated him very strictly in the hopes of establishing a feat of Mozart in his son.
At age 17, Beethoven moved to Vienna, the most central city of Music, and received further education there. He performed as a pianist at first rather than as a composer. Since then, Beethoven’s life was a series of hardship. He suffered with grim realities of life despite his unending activities as a composer. Moreover, his love toward women, which was the driving force in his life, turned out to be chains of failure. His biggest ordeal, however, as widely known, was his lifelong hearing difficulties, which would be a fatal blow to musicians. He was stone-deaf during the last 10 years of life.
Beethoven’s composition activities can be classified into three periods. The compositions during his first period (1786~1803), which includes his first and second symphonies, saliently feature the influences of Haydn and Mozart. The works from his second period (1804~1816) reveal Beethoven’s originality. He wrote his next six symphonies (Nos.3~8) during this time. His third period (1817~1827) was the most climactic moment of his composition activities and of superhuman artistry. Despite his complete loss of hearing since 1814, he composed a number of masterpieces that transcend our musical senses. It was during this era that he created his famous ninth symphony, which is regarded as the best work in terms of both musical forms and the contents.
He succeeded in perfecting the musical forms of the classical era to its highest achievement. However, it was he who also opened doors for romantic styles. He expressed music into serious works of art with his gigantic imagination and free forms. It is probably no wonder that he exhibited his aptitude toward romantic styles rather than absolute music since he spent his life in a series of hardship. But his magnificent works were not merely carried away by emotions; they contained a beauty of stable forms. This created the world of music of his own.
Beethoven, therefore, was not only a great composer, but also an intellectual who put together other genres of art including literature. In addition, he was a true victor who overcame all hardships with his strong spiritual determination. He was also a philosopher who put freedom, equality, and human love into practice.
His major works include 9 symphonies, 32 piano sonatas, solo works, chamber, and orchestral works. He created many works in various genres. He died in 1827 from an illness.
