Bach, Johann Sebastian

J.S. Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany. The Bach family had had many distinguished musicians for about 200 years. Bach studied violin at a young age. He lost both of his parents at age 10. He grew up in his organist brother’s house and studied organ and clavier there. He later became a renowned organist.
Bach’s composition activities can be divided by Court of Weimar, Court of Cöthen, and Leipzig. He spent about 10 years in the Court of Weimar and developed the foundation of his musical abilities there. He later worked as Kapellmeister of the Court of Cöthen, and wrote solo pieces, chamber, and orchestral works. It was during his stay in Leipzig years (1723~1750) that he was most active in his composition creativity.  His compositions during that era include vocal works such as cantatas, oratorio, passion, and organ pieces.
Bach’s music compiled most of the musical styles up to the 18th century. He set a ground for German music that influenced most of the later composers such as Beethoven and Wagner. His composition styles focus on counterpoint and add harmonies deftly. In such terms, his compositions can be regarded as new and original. Beethoven used to call him the “Original Father of Harmony”
Bach was a devout Protestant and devoted his life in offering his music to God. It is no exaggeration to say that the beauty of his music with rich melodies and flawless counterpoint techniques was largely affected by his religious belief.
His major works include masses, St. Matthew’s Passion, toccatas, organ pieces, solo works, duets, chamber music and many concertos which include Brandenburg Concerto. His famous “Well-Tempered Clavier”, which consists of 48 pieces based on 12 equal temperaments, is of great historical worth; one critic said “This work itself alone would be good enough for us even if every musical work in the world disappears.”
